Disney Live Action vs. Animation
We have all seen Beauty and The Beast (1991) at least once as a kid. The thought of Belle falling in love with the personality of the beast (Adam) just warmed all of our hearts. In this piece, we decided to take notes of the differences in the 2017 live action and 1991 original animation of Beauty and The Beast. Of course, you can never go wrong with a tale as old as time. These differences include obvious and small details that were just slightly off.
Our first observation concerns Belle’s father, Maurice. In the original movie, Maurice is just an inventor. However, in the live action movie Maurice is an artist/painter and an inventor.
Our second difference played a large role in the movie. In the original movie they, never mentioned Belle’s mother; while in the newest version they had a whole scene for her. It included a background story to why her mother was no longer in the picture.
Another difference involves cute little chip and Mrs. Potts. In the original movie Mrs. Potts had a whole cupboard of children...or should we say tea cups. But in the 2017 version, Chip was an only child. We’ve always wondered what happened to the tea cups once everyone transformed back to human.
Next, In the original movie once Belle runs away to save her father we just see the beast looking heartbroken as his true love runs away from him. In the 2017 version he has his own song (Evermore) that he puts all of his heart in as he sings.
In addition, the 1991 film, the enchantress was just shown on the stained glass window, they never showed her as a physical person/character. In the 2017 film the enchantress was an actual character who had human interactions with the rest of the crew.
Another difference that we saw was that in original movie the castle doesn’t seem to be affected by the petals falling, the only ones that were affected were the crew that lived in the castle. In the Live action film, the castle seemed to break down each time the petal fell.
We all know Emma Watson to be huge on women’s rights. She decided that she did not want her character, Belle, to just wear flats. Instead, she wore sturdy farm boots to properly emphasize how someone would dress for the physical activity that Belle goes through on a daily basis.
In the 1991 version of Beauty and The Beast, Maurice (Belle’s dad) was put into the dungeon for just trespassing. While in the 2017 version he was put in the dungeon for taking a rose from the Beast’s garden to then give to Belle.
Lastly, In the 2017 movie, we had the pleasure of meeting a new character. Madam Gardrobe (the wardrobe) was originally in the 1991 movie but her husband Cadenza (the piano) was barely brought into the new 2017 version
The Jungle Book
Disney has been improving their animation. Take the Jungle Book for example, It went from the cartoon version (1967) to the live action film (2016). They began to develop the actual movie on July 9, 2013 and it was released on April 15, 2016. The 1967 version running time was 78 minutes white the 2016 version lasted for 106 minutes. A difference that we have noticed is that instead of showing Walt Disney in their movie posters, the animators have changed it to only show Disney. This clearly indicates that disney is starting to change, this includes their animation and the way they have presented themselves to the audience.
Sleeping Beauty
In a change of perspective, Disney has created a movie that emphasizes the villain's point of view in Maleficent. Disney is slowly starting to improve their animations/story ideas. Maleficent's story seemed to be more detailed and complex than the actual Sleeping Beauty. It tells the life of Maleficent and how she slowly started to care for Aurora. The animation that the illustrator used for the little creatures in the woods was breathtaking. We personally loved the glowing blue fairies. Another detail that caught our attention was Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Their realistic features helped us see how young they actually were, The realistic version of Flora,Fauna, and Merryweather seemed to be more goofier than the animation version.
Alice in Wonderland
The 2010 remake of the Original Alice in Wonderland movie (1951) covered everything from the Madhatter to the twins Tweedledee and Tweedledum, but now in a much more realistic perspective. Allowing the scenes to be even more intense resulted in an amazing imaginative performance by the actors and outstanding work of the animators. The animations, of course, have improved with time, making the 2010 remake out right stunning.
Cinderella
Our final movie that has been transformed to a live action film is Cinderella. Both animation and live action movies were astonishing. The details that were captured were phenomenal. From the pumpkin carriage up to the twinkling shoes. The live action film made all our dreams come true by showing us how Cinderella's gorgeous blue ball gown dress would look in real life. Of course we can’t forget about her little helpers. This includes the little mice,Gus and jaq, and the coachman the goose. Cinderella (2015) had more of a feminine effect showing girls that they could be independent but also receive help when it’s needed.
To sum it all up, Disney has been improving over the past years. As seen in several of their remakes of the original movies. But now with an enhanced realistic standpoint.
People have argued that Disney is slowly losing their creativity because they are remaking their original movies. Let us know if you prefer the animation or the live action films in the comments below...go ahead and be our guest!
